Rent A Beast
Rent A Beast came to school with a range of insects. We loved learning about the different minibeasts and even got to hold them. We learned that minibeasts are incredibly important to our eco-system.
Stem Ambassador
Jen Philips came to talk to the children about habitats around the world and the animals that live in them.
Roman Solider
Class 3 had a interesting visit from a Roman Soldier. He talked to them about life as a Roman Solider. He showed them his amour and the children got to try it on.
Hockey Festival at Denstone College
Class 3 had the opportunity to take part in a hockey festival involving other local schools.
Falconry Visit
As part of our STEAM week we had a visit from Kingsley Bird and Falconry Centre. The children really enjoyed seeing the birds and those that wanted to got to hold one and even fly it to another child. We learnt lots of new facts about these birds.
Museum Afternoon
To showcase the learning that we have done this term we held a ‘museum’ afternoon. Visitors were invited in to look at our work and ask us questions about our knowledge.
Class 1 completed activities linked to life cycles, sang songs and completed a craft activity.
Class 2 tasted food from the 1960’s including tinned fruit salad and pineapple upside down cake. Class 3 weighed out the quantity of sweets that they would have been allowed for a week during World War II, ate potatoes that they had grown in the garden and made a ‘chocolate spread’ from potatoes and cocoa.
Whitemoor Lakes
The children in year 4 had the opportunity to take part in a range of adventurous activities at Whitemoor Lakes.
Bike Ability
The children in class 3 enjoyed a session of Bike Ability. The children learnt practical skills and how to cycle safely on today’s roads.
Coronation celebrations
The children enjoyed an fun filled afternoon to celebrate King Charles III coronation.
Author Chris White
The children enjoyed working with Chris White. He inspired them to write and perform their own amazing poems!
World Book Day 2023
Our theme for this year was caring for our environment. Each class produced a piece of writing relating to the story ‘Giant’ written by Juliet and Charles Snape. The children made their own hats using recycled materials.
Cameron Homes Building Site
Class 2 visited Cameron Homes building site called Sycamore Grange in Ashbourne. They were given a site tour around the new houses and they watched Chasetown Civil Engineering, the groundworks company, lay tarmac to create new drivesways. They learnt lots about the different types of materials that are used on a building site.
Pancake Day
On Pancake Day we were lucky enough to eat delicious freshly made pancakes! We talked about why we were eating them, how they were made and our favourite toppings. We even had a go at flipping pancakes!
Maths Day
The children worked in their coloured teams to complete a range of activities. These included …
- Creating symmetrical pictures using different shapes.
- Recording their scores during team games.
- Making different arrangements using a certain number of cubes.
- Repeating patterns.
- Shape pictures using Numicon
Lego Day
The children worked in small groups to make a moving Ferris wheel. They followed the instructions really well. They then added their own parts to it and used an iPad to make the Ferris wheel move and lights flash by using coding.
Hoglets
The children enjoyed taking part in a Hoglets workshop. They learnt all about hedgehogs and the problems they face through a fun game. They got to meet Harry, a rescued hedgehog from British Wildlife Rescue Centre. Class 2 and 3 children constructed a ‘hedgehog friendly’ housing estate with their incredible imaginations and a pile of Lego! Class 1 children created their own hedgehog made from clay.
Science Day
As part of her work with the Galapagos Conservation Trust, Miss Langford shared their new book with us before it goes to print! ‘Tessa the Giant Tortoise: A Galapagos Journey,’ tells the story of a giant tortoise as she undertakes her annual migration on the Galapagos Islands. By joining Tessa the children learnt and reflected on the positive relationship they can have with nature through everyday environmentally friendly actions. Many exciting activities were planned for the day and the children came to school dressed as an explorer, a tortoise or in tortoise colours!
Sponsored Run
The School Council organised a sponsored run to raise money for new playground equipment to be used at break times and lunch times. A tremendous £1079.50 (plus gift aid) was raised. Thank you to a grandparent (she knows who she is!) for supporting the School Council with the organisation and motivating all the children!
Apedale Heritage Centre
To complement their topic on Lord Shaftesbury, the children in Key Stage 2 visited Apedale Heritage Centre. They went down a mine to see what it was like for children in Victorian times.
World Book Day 2022
Our theme this year was Julia Donaldson. We focussed on ‘Jack and The Flum Flum Tree’. The children came to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. They took part in a picture quiz and won prizes for their team.
Number Day
We had lots of fun doing lots of different activities on Number Day!
Class 1 did a number hunt and then did lots of exciting activities all linked to the theme of Chinese New Year. This included putting the animals in order and learning to understand ordinal numbers – 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.
Class 2 played a number track game, snakes and ladders, number square challenge and addition football. This was loads of fun with lots of competition!
Class 3 played lots of different number games. They played Yahtzee, battleships and four in a row. They decorated their favourite number and wrote number sentences about that number.
Roman Soldier
The children in Key Stage 2 were ‘virtually’ visited by a Roman Soldier in connection with their topic this half term.
Time Travel
To start our topic this term which is based on ‘What we have learned from the past?’ we had a mysterious visitor who left behind muddy footprints and a range of costumes and artefacts. The children had a great time investigating where the items had come from!
Poet from the Peaks!
Poet From the Peaks, Andy Tooze, inspired the children to write and perform their own amazing poems!
SUAT supports and leads in the set-up of new academies joining the partnership. The sevices provided by the central support function cover both educational and non-educational support. In terms of educational support, SUAT is linked to the School of Education of Staffordshire University, which is an outstanding ITT provider.
