Cultural Capital at St Peter’s CE Academy, Alton

How do we foster our children’s appreciation of the world and cultures around them?

Cultural capital is the growth of knowledge, behaviours and skills that our children can draw upon to succeed as happy and fulfilled members of society, both now and in their later lives, on their personal and professional journeys.

Cultural capital gives our children power. It helps them to flourish, to achieve their goals, to become successful and rise up as fruitful members of our society.

Cultural capital is having the tools to give our children the desire to aspire and to achieve, no matter their starting point. At St Peter’s, we strongly believe that for our children to aspire and be successful, both academically and personally, they need to be given rich and continued opportunities to develop their cultural capital.

Cultural capital is fostered and nurtured in the following areas, embedded within our whole curriculum:

  • Personal Development
  • Social Development
  • Physical Development
  • Spiritual Development
  • Moral Development

Cultural development

This was recognised throughout our SIAMS inspection report –

“This is a Christian family community which nurtures each individual person. As a result, children and adults thrive emotionally and spiritually in an encouraging environment, underpinned by the Christian values of love, respect and friendship.”

To compliment this further and give the children a wide range of opportunities we provide…

  • Careers talks from a range of pathways across society
  • Visits within our local community and further afield (Cannock Chase museum, Space Centre, Mosque, Synagogue, Dimmingsdale – nature walks and tree planting, etc.)
  • Theatre trips annually
  • Whitemoor Lakes
  • 50 Things To Do Before You’re 9!
  • Mental health: Relax Kids, Reflective Spaces.
  • Productions in school
  • Pupil Led Worship on a range of Biblical and worldwide contexts
  • Music tuition paid for by school for Y3/4
  • Chartwells: healthy eating, healthy bodies
  • Feed the Hungry kindness bags and food packing
  • Uttoxeter Cares Project and links with our local care home (inter-generational work)
  • Food Bank projects
  • Harvest service
  • Inter faith days
  • School Council, Worship Team
  • Transition work with Middle School, across our federation and MAT
  • Links with Staffordshire University (we’re hoping to build on this opportunity)
  • RSE Curriculum (we are continuing to develop this through our refined curriculum).
